The Mill House Museum

The Mill House Museum contains an eclectic collection of documents, photographs, and other artifacts related to Occoquan’s history and that of the surrounding region.  Over 400 items are catalogued and many of these are on permanent display.  One strength is the Society’s collection of Occoquan-related photographs.

While a number of these are on display in the Museum, many more have yet to be catalogued and made available to the general public.  Of the catalogued items, roughly 20% are ceramics and textiles, 10% are scientific, medical, or technological items, 10% are household objects, 10% are library and archival documents, 10% are photographs, and the remainder fall into assorted miscellaneous categories. How I Take 3 Young Kids To A Restaurant

5389756103_6522aefe05_b

1. Have Some “Restaurant Rules”
Before entering, we covered our “Restaurant Rules” — No pushing, yelling, or shooting paper off of the straws, and then we’ll order dessert. (Or something to that general effect.)

2. Don’t Go Anywhere That Doesn’t Have Crayons Available
They were incredibly busy. We were seated right away, but things were pretty backed up. Thank God they give us crayons and handy-dandy menus with connect-the-dots, mazes, and other things to color that captured the kids’ undivided attention.

3 .Have A Question And Answer Game Ready To Go
While waiting for our food, and running low on activities on the kid menu, we played a Question & Answer game. The question to the kids: “What are the first 5 rides you want to go on the next time we go to Disneyland?” This is my favorite — they are excited about their answers, we (sort of) get to practice taking turns, and my kids could be asked this question every hour, on the hour, and they’d still be excited to tell you their answers. River Mill Park Now Open in Occoquan

River Mill Park became a reality this past weekend with its grand opening at the site of the old River Station water treatment plant on the Occoquan River. The 1.1-acre park, according to a release by Prince William County, includes green space, upgrades to the footbridge, an event pavilion, restroom facilities and an overlook area.

Prince William County funded the construction of the park and its bathrooms with $1.45 million through its capital improvements program. Prince William Board of County Supervisor’s Chairman Corey Stewart was effusive in his praise.

“There is no greater legacy, no longer legacy that a community can leave to its children and its grandchildren, than the construction of parks, the preservation of land and this beauty that will exist long after all of us are gone,” he said in a statement. “All of this makes Prince William County, the Town of Occoquan and this entire region such a better place to live, and that’s what brings in people.

“It’s what brings in jobs and it makes the quality of life for all of us and our families so much greater.”

Kids’ Meal

The kids’ meal or children’s meal is a meal tailored to and marketed to youngsters. Most kids’ meals come in colorful bags or cardboard boxes with depictions of activities on the bag or box and a plastic toy inside.

The first kids’ meal, emerged at Burger Chef in 1973 and succeeded. Discerning the popularity of the kids’ meal, McDonald’s introduced its Happy Meal in 1978 and other fast food corporations, including Burger King, followed suit with their own kids’ meals.

Some fast food corporations considered youngsters their “most important” customers, owing to the success of the kids’ meal. Their effectiveness has been ascribed to the fact that the patronage of youngsters often means the patronage of a family and to the allure of the toys, which often are in collectable series. In 2006, $360 million of the expenditures of fast food corporations was for toys in kids’ meals, which numbered over 1.2 billion.

In recent years, the popularity of the kids’ meal has receded, with a study by NPD Group indicating that there was a 6% decrease in kids’ meals sales in 2011.  Explanations include the fact that kids’ outgrowing the meals earlier than before. Youngsters have “become more sophisticated in their palettes” and seek items from the regular menu but in smaller servings. Kids’ meal toys are also no longer appealing to the increasingly technology-oriented youth, who prefer video games.

Kids’ meals have evolved in response to critics, offering healthier selections and greater variety. In 2011, nineteen food chains participating in the Kids Live Well initiative pledged to “offer at least one children’s meal that has fewer than 600 calories, no soft drinks and at least two items from the following food groups: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins or low-fat dairy”.
