A veteran event planner, Greg Jenkins has seen a fair share of office holiday party gaffes. He recalls one tipsy guest who took down the Christmas tree, having lost his balance and tried in vain to steady himself by grabbing onto it.
Also etched in his memory is the “wardrobe malfunction” at another holiday gathering, when a young female employee in a low-cut dress got too wild on the dance floor.
You don’t have to destroy property or expose yourself to make a bad impression at the company holiday party. Staying glued to your smartphone or complaining about the food may seem innocuous, but such behaviors can hurt you professionally. What you do at these celebrations can also help to further your career. Continue reading
Going out to eat can be a treat for a special event, like a birthday, graduation or holiday. But it can also be a reward for good behavior or a way to acknowledge your kids’ efforts. You don’t need to splurge on a fancy meal. Just going out for ice cream could be enough to show them you’ve noticed the hard work they’ve done at school, at art class or on the sports field.
1. Eating salmon is beneficial in the treatment of osteoarthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions. Salmon contains small proteins called bioactive peptides. One in particular, called calcitonin, has been shown to increase, regulate and stabilize collagen synthesis in human osteoarthritic cartilage. This salmon-found protein also improves bone density and strength.
2. Eating salmon reduces risk of depression. The brain is 60 percent fat and most of that is the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, which is critical it is for brain function and a healthy nervous system. Eating salmon regularly has been associated with reducing the risk and incidence of depression, hostility in young adults and cognitive decline in the elderly. Continue reading
Hemp seeds are nutty and sweet like pine nuts but offer a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Flax and chia seeds share the omega-3 benefits, but when they get wet, their mucilage fibre gets slippery and sticky. Hemp’s crunchy yet creamy texture makes it the most versatile vegan omega-3 source. Try it in soup instead of dairy to add creaminess. Its high protein content makes it a perfect addition to meal replacement bars, cereal, porridge, salads, pesto, pasta, dressings, sauces, smoothies, desserts and side dishes.
Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids in an easily digestible form. Three tablespoons (30 g) of hemp hearts contain ten grams of protein — more than the amount found in a large boiled egg.
What’s more, 65 percent of the total protein content of hemp seed comes from an easily digestible protein called edestin, which is readily absorbed and utilized by the human body. It is also hypoallergenic, meaning it has a low allergy potential, making it a great replacement for soy and peanuts (provided it is processed in a factory free of tree nuts.)

The Loft Gallery was founded by Marcia Weidler and Jackie Paetzold in 1986, and is comprised of 20 professional artists. Artists are selected according to the quality of their work, educational backgrounds and experience with their particular media. Their shared dedication in organizing a co-op, which could present their work in the professional setting it deserved, led to the opening of the gallery with a handful of local artists. Special awards and recognition in their respective fields are also considered. A variety of media is represented, including watercolors, oils, woodcuts, pastels, acrylics, photography, original prints, collagraphs, lithographs, stained glass and pottery. Styles follow traditional lines from detailed representational work to soft impressionism.
Each of the artists has brought a personal clientele to the gallery, which has its own carefully established reputation and patronage. Press releases and publicity are sent on a regular basis and open houses are held monthly.
